There are certain risks, but these risks depend on the level of radiation used for medical diagnosis. Generally, the radiation dosage used for diagnosis is lower compared to that used for treatment. However, using radiation in doses that are too low may negatively impact the diagnostic process, such as making it impossible to obtain accurate or reliable results, which could in turn affect the effectiveness of treatment. Appropriate and experienced use of radiation can maximize its diagnostic benefits while minimizing associated risks. For some types of diagnostic procedures, such as abdominal examinations using a computed tomography (CT) scanner, higher doses of radiation may be required. According to medical statistical data, the risk of death from cancer caused by radiation exposure is approximately 1 in 2,000 people, or 0.05%. In contrast, the risk from other factors, such as underlying diseases or high-risk behaviors, is as high as 1 in 4, or 25%.
Radiation therapy is a treatment method used to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in a specific area. The effects of radiation therapy are localized to the area being treated, and it does not result in the accumulation of radiation in the body.
Multiple sessions of radiation therapy are necessary because cancer cells exhibit abnormal division and lose their ability to repair themselves when exposed to radiation. Administering small doses of radiation frequently allows the tumor to gradually be destroyed without the ability to repair itself, while blood vessels can deliver oxygen to the tumor to enhance the effect of the radiation. In contrast, normal body cells exposed to small doses of radiation can repair themselves, resulting in minimal adverse effects on the body. The number of radiation sessions depends on the type of cancer cells. Some cancers may require only 15-20 sessions, while others may need 35-40 sessions. For patients whose physical condition is not suitable for prolonged treatment, such as those who are paralyzed or require a ventilator, rapid treatment may be necessary, and they may receive only 1-15 sessions of radiation, with higher doses administered in each session. This is determined by the discretion of the treating physician.
In most cases, no. Radiation therapy generates molecules called free radicals that kill cancer cells, and oxygen is required in this process. Because many vitamins and supplements include antioxidants, which limit the amount of oxygen in tissue and organs, they could potentially decrease radiation’s effectiveness.
